The Birr Equestrian Centre has been providing locals and visitors with a full riding and training service for more than 25 years now. For the last five years it has been operating from the 160 acre farm of Kingsborough House, a 19th century farmhouse which was originally the home of the agent for the Ely O'Carroll estate. Noel Cosgrave has been involved with the Centre since it started and now offers a wide variety of options. There are many trail riding and trekking routes through the farm, boglands and forest trails, with some wonderful views of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. To enjoy the scenery to the full, there's a minimum duration of two hours for the treks but the Centre will happily tailor programmes of any duration to suit groups' and individuals' specific needs.
Special instruction on show jumping and pre-hunt courses is available and hunting can be arranged with the local Ormond Hunt. During the school holidays, the Centre arranges Pony Camp weeks for children and teenagers under the slogan "Own a Pony for a Week". The Centre has both indoor and outdoor arenas and a stable of 20 horses and an equal number of ponies. Livery is available, there's a changing room with showers and also a coffee room. Open all year, the Centre is located about two miles from the Heritage Town of Birr where a wide range of accommodation can be found.
