Clonmacnoise

This early Christian site once the most important centre of learning founded by St Ciaran in 545AD on the banks of the River Shannon is regarded as one of Europe’s finest monastic ruins.

The ruins consist of a cathedral, eight churches, two round towers and three high crosses and a large collection of early Christian grave slabs (10 to 13th century). Facilities include a visitors centre, an audio visual presentation, guided tours, disabled access. this site was once the most important centre of learning in Europe - a bright beacon of light during Europe's Dark Ages.
