Walk away those city blues!! The Slieve Bloom Walking Club organise a Programme of Walks on most Sundays from May to the end of October, with local guides to enable you to get the most enjoyment and to benefit from their local knowledge of the terrain and of the Flora and Fauna encountered alone the way. There is also a Slieve Bloom Walking Festival held on the first weekend in May each year. In tune with nature....far from the maddening crowds! Long Distance Walks
The Slieve Bloom Way This is a signed and marked walk of 70 km[43miles], designed for the serious hill walker to experience the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the fullest. This is a gentle cross-country long distance walking route of 29km / 18 miles. It links 2 other long distance walks, namely the Slieve Bloom Way and the Grand Canal Way. It runs north from Cadamstown across extensive boglands joining the Grand Canal near Kilcolgan Castle, about 3 miles west of Pollagh village. The Grand Canal Way The West Offaly section of this walk runs for approximately 20 miles / 26km from Tullamore, the capital town of Co. Offaly, to Shannon Harbour, on the mighty River Shannon. Looped Walks Looped walks varying in length from 3km to 15 km can be found in six different locations in the Slieve Blooms- Kinnitty, Cadamstown, Glenafelly, Monicknew, Clonaslee, and Glenbarrow. Three looped walks at Kinnitty all have the same starting point at the rear of Kinnitty Castle.They vary in length from 4 to 15 km Eco Walks An Eco Walk is signposted at Knockbarron on the road to Kilcormac. Knockbarron Wood shelters one of the finest intact esker systems in the country. Detailed information on www.slievebloom.ie focuses the visitor’s attention on its fascinating Ice Age story and on the ecology of the woods. Knockbarron Wood contains a biodiversity trail of extraordinary significance. In this beautiful beech wood carpeted by bluebells in springtime you will find one of the best-preserved eskers in Europe- unchanged since the ice age. . An Eco Walk will draw your attention to the flora, fauna and geology in a way which is most enjoyable and very easy to appreciate. Indeed, these walks will give you new eyes for familiar places, and enrich your walking experience wherever you go!
